  • All employees eligible for the 2008 Lam Employee PC Sale should receive login information via e-mail at their company-issued e-mail accounts. If you have not received an e-mail, but believe you are eligible for the auction please contact Julie Tran Ha in the Lam Research IT Department.
  • Once you receive your login information, type in your username and password in the box on the left side of this window, and click "login." Once logged in, you will be able to change your account information and bid on items through the web site. Be sure to enter your enter your shipping address in the "My Account" section before bidding on any items!
  • These auctions are very much like eBay and other online auctions, however there are some small differences:
  • The 2008 Employee PC Sale is a private auction sale only available to employees in the Fremont location of Lam Research.
  • All auctions start with a very low starting bid with no reserve price.
  • There is no sniping of an auction.
  • Placing a bid on an item you are interested in couldn’t be easier. When viewing the item details page there are two areas where you can place your bid, one next to the item details and a second at the bottom of the page.
  • To place your bid simply enter the amount you wish to bid, for example 50.00. Please note that no currency symbols are required. The bid will be placed in US dollars.
  • Once done you will be asked to review your bid and you will also be able to view vital item details such as the shipping conditions before confirming your bid. To submit your bid simply press the “Place Bid” button.
  • If your bid is high enough to take the lead in the auction a confirmation message will be displayed to you, however if your bid has not taken the lead be it due to a higher proxy bid you will be invited to make a higher bid.
  • Should you decide to retract your bid this can be done via the “Current Bids” section of the member’s area.
  • You can also place a proxy bid. Proxy bidding allows you to place your “High Bid”. At all times you will only pay the lowest required bid to win the auction. For example, if the current bid on an auction is 500.00 you can place a proxy bid of 2,000. Should you remain the only bidder you will only pay 500.00. However should the item receive other bids the site will automatically re-bid for you (up to 2,000 in this scenario) to ensure you remain in the lead up to your maximum (proxy) bid.
  1. When you place a bid, you enter the maximum amount you're willing to pay for the item. The seller and other bidders won't know your maximum bid amount.

  2. This site places bids on your behalf starting with the next bid increment for the auction. The system will bid as much as necessary to make sure that you remain the high bidder. We'll keep bidding for you until bidding reaches your maximum amount (proxy bid).

  3. If another bidder has placed the same bid before you or a higher maximum bid, the system will let you know that you've been outbid so that you can place another bid if you want. However, if no other bidder has a higher maximum bid at the end of the auction, you will win the item even if your bid doesn't go as high as your maximum bid. You may pay significantly less than your maximum price. This means you don't have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed.

  • You won't necessarily pay the amount of your maximum bid. This system will increase your bid on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position. Your maximum bid is kept confidential (until it is exceeded by another bidder).

Example 1:

  • The current bid for an item is $10.00. Julie is the high bidder. (Julie has placed a maximum bid of $50.00 on this item, but her maximum bid is kept confidential from other users.)
  • Bill views this item and decides to place a maximum bid of $65.00. Bill becomes the high bidder because his bid is greater than Julie's bid.
  • A bid increment of $5.00 is added to Julie’s maximum bid of $50.00. That means that Bill’s current bid is now $55.00. Julie is sent an email that she has been outbid.

Example 2:
  • The current bid for an item is $10.00. Julie is the high bidder. (Julie has placed a maximum bid of $50.00 on this item, but her maximum bid is kept confidential from other users.)
  • Bill views this item and decides to place a maximum bid of $25.00. Julie remains the high bidder because her bid was greater than Bill's bid.
  • A bid increment of $5.00 is added to Bill's maximum bid of $25.00. That means that Julie’s current bid is now $30.00. Bill is immediately notified that he has been outbid and is not the high bidder.
  • If no other bids are placed, Julie wins the auction for $30.00.
  • The highest bid placed on each auction will win the auction. The winner has 48 hours to pay for the computer.
  • Yes. Click here to link to a number of practice auctions and try it out. Please note that if these auctions end with you as the winner, you are not responsible for purchasing. These are for practice and education only.
  • Shipping is included at no additional charge.
  • All applicable sales tax is included in the sale price.
  • You can bid as often as you like. You can place a bid that is higher than the current bid by only the required bid increment, or you can place a proxy bidthat will only increase as others bid on the item. The proxy bid will be familiar to eBay users, as the system in place there for bidding.
  • Generally, no. Once you have made your bid you are agreeing to purchase the computer up to that amount. There is a confirmations screen that asks you to confirm your bid, so mistakes should occur rarely. Because of Proxy Bidding you may not have to pay your maximum bid amount.
  • Bid retractions are allowed if you make a mistake when bidding. For example, adding an extra zero on your bid. The mechanism for retracting is to contact Anna Vargas at Liquis.
  • The Lam Employee PC Sale uses an automatic bidding feature in which the system automatically bids on your behalf, up to the maximum amount you set. Enter the maximum amount you're willing to spend on an item, and the system will continue to bid incrementally for you until either you're the high bidder or your maximum is reached. This means you don't have to keep coming back to bid every time someone else places a bid. Practice bidding here.

  • Here's how bidding on this site works:

We'll keep bidding for you until bidding reaches your maximum amount.

  • The bid increment is the amount by which a bid will be raised each time the current bid is outdone. It is predetermined based on the current high bid.
  • Here is how increments are determined:

Current Price Bid Increment
$10.00 - $24.99 $1.00
$25.00 - $199.99 $5.00
$200.00 and above $10.00

  • There are NO reserve prices on the Lam Employee PC Sale. The high bid will win the auction.
  • A reserve price is the lowest price at which the seller (Liquis) is willing to sell the items.
  • Liquis will list all PCs at a starting bid of $10 and all Laptops at a starting bid of $25.
  • No. All computers will be auctioned with auctions lasting 7 days. The high bidder will win the auction.
  • Auction sniping is the process of a bidder watching a timed online auction and placing a winning bid at the last possible moment (often seconds before the end of the auction), giving other bidders no time to raise their bid if they want to compete to win the item.
  • All Lam Employee PC Sale auctions use a snipe protection feature that adds 5 minutes to the end of an auction that has a bid in the last 5 minutes. This allows all users to get a fair chance to bid on an item.
  • The item watch features lets you keep a close eye on any auction without having to place a bid on it. This feature means you can be kept up to date on how an auction is doing and prepares you to place a winning last minute bid. You can watch any auction by clicking on the “Watch this item” link on any auction page.

  • Auctions that start on April 14th - April 18th will end 7 days later on April 21 - April 25.

  • It is not one large auction, it is several different auctions. We wanted to give everyone an opportunity to participate but not create an auction environment where bidders don’t know if they won for three weeks. Because this is the first time Lam GIS has used this method, we also wanted to spread the auction out in small manageable pieces in the event we need to tweak specific policy and procedure as we go along.
  • Additionally, the auctions are spread over three weeks to allow all Lam Employees ample opportunity to bid no computers. By spreading the process out over a few weeks, we allow employees on vacation, traveling, or otherwise unavailable multiple opportunities to purchase computers.
  • Lam may have other auctions during the year as we retire other computers. It is not know when those will take place.
  • Or, you can access this system from any computer, anywhere, and you may enter bids at leisure. Using proxy bids will also allow you the flexibility of entering your bid on your schedule.
  • Power supplies for laptops are included with each auction.
  • A mouse and keyboard will be included with each PC auction (Towers, desktops and rackmounts). Make and model of mouse and keyboard may not match the maker of the system.
  • See each individual auction for other accessories included with the computer. The "Hardware Info" section and the "Overall System Summary" section in each auction will detail any accessories that are included with that particular system.
  • Because of availability and system configuration there may be differences among auctions with regard to accessories and system hardware.
  • Each system comes preloaded with Windows XP along with Microsoft's Certificate of Authenticity (COA) on the system.
  • No CDs are included (System restore, OS, or any other disks).
  • No extra software is included on the computer.
  • All computers, laptops or PCs, will be configured with the base software load that they were purchased with; The Microsoft Operating System which in most cases is Windows XP Pro.
  • No, however, the Recovery CD can be obtained from Lenovo by contacting them directly. There is usually a fee associated with obtaining the CDs.
  • Each computer was purchased with an OEM licensed Windows Operating System that transfers with that specific computer. There is a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker on each computer.
  • The Windows Operating System installed is already registered and has the corresponding COA sticker on the computer. A copy of the recovery CDs can be obtained from Lenovo, not from Microsoft, for your Model and Type number.
  • You may bid on as many as you like and win as many desktops as you want, but we request that you keep your purchases to one laptop per person so that others have an opportunity to participate on laptops.
  • Liquis will ship you the computer to you at your home address at no additional charge.
  • You will receive an email from Liquis if you are a winning bidder. Through links on the email or on the website you can pay for the computer and the system will be shipped out the next business day.
  • Your computer will ship the next business day following payment.
  • Your computer will be shipped using UPS and you will receive an email from the UPS system (QuantumView) with your tracking number.

In environments where computers are leased, selling computers to employees is not possible.
  • Computers not purchased will be placed back into the auction queue until the end of the three week auction period. If computers still go unsold, they will be designated for charitable donations. (GIS has a list of requests for charitable donations and they will get the first right of refusal.)
